Planning the next steps in a postdoctoral career is an important decision - even more so under current circumstances when challenges are posed through the pandemic. Due to a wide range of academic institutions and continuity regarding stable conditions for researchers, Baden-Württemberg remains an attractive location to pursue postdoctoral careers. In order to highlight opportunities for postdoc careers in the German Southwest, Baden-Württemberg International invited young scientists from around the world together with the University of Tübingen and the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) to the first session of the 2021 virtual series “Your Postdoc in Germany”.
The University of Tübingen, endowed with the University of Excellence status during the last round of the German Excellence Strategy 2019 and home to three Clusters of Excellence, attracts researchers through its interdisciplinary, innovative and international profile. Research at the University of Tübingen is conducted at numerous collaborative research centres and research training groups. As one of the nine, all-encompassing research universities of Baden-Württemberg, the university offers a research campus that is part of an attractive ecosystem with major scientific organisations such as the Max Planck institutes, Helmholtz Association Research Centres or the Leibniz Association’s institutions.
Various funding schemes, such as the Intramural funding programmes to promote Junior Researchers, the Teaching@Tuebingen Fellowship, offer possibilities for postdoctoral researchers to finance their stay. The DKFZ is part of the Helmholtz Association and one of the leading cancer research centres in the world as well as the largest biomedical research centre in Germany. Postdoc research can be pursued in basic, epidemiological as well as computational and translational cancer research and benefits from the proximity to other research institutions located in the Biomedical Science Campus of Heidelberg. Through the competitive DKFZ Postdoctoral Fellowship, the DKFZ offers exciting conditions for postdoctoral scientists to advance their research career.
Furthermore, candidates with a physicians’ backgrounds can apply for the DKFZ Clinician Scientist programme to acquire research experience in the field of cancer.
